People Either Love
Cats...or Just Don't Understand Them !
No animal lover can tell you WHEN they
discovered an affinity for their furry friends -- it is just
there! As a child, I spent many hours taming all of the barn
cats on my Grandparents large farm. Though I didn't realize
it at the time, I was also developing an understanding of cat
behavior.
Unlike dogs, most cats do not run up begging for
your approval each time you walk into a room. They are far too busy
grooming themselves or each other...or taking a nap. Your pet
cat is not only independent; each cat has its own very unique
personality.
After many years of owning multiple cats, I
can't imagine working on my computer without a purring ball of fur
in my lap....or not having to move a kitten out of my favorite
chair in order to sit down. Though each cat is unique in its
habits and personality, there are certain health and behavioral
traits that all cats share.
Cat lovers are interesting people.
Their kitten often has a cat tree or bed. There
are cat t-shirts and calendars, jewelry and toys,
cat fine art ...and on and on. I've always felt that those
who said they didn't like cats say that because they have never
spent time with one. Only by living with a pet that
is inside at least part of the time, do you begin to see
the traits specific to felines in general -- and your cat in
particular.
If your cat is shredding the furniture, not
using the litter box, jumping on the kitchen counter or
fighting, the trick is to recognize which behaviors can be
changed through training and which are instinctive and thus must be
managed.
There are few problems with cats that cannot be
solved. The information here will help you to live happily
with your furball for many years.
Cats are not dumb and will often find a way to
reach a goal while expending as little energy as possible.
That was Nilla's plan (photo below). After days of
watching birds at the feeder fly off as she crept through the
grass, she began hanging out where the action
was.
